Burning Man Guide for Virgins

There's only so much that people can tell you about Burning Man. I've heard countless stories and been given tons of advice about BM, but it's nothing compared to experiencing it in person. Honestly, nothing that has been said, can do it justice! Just being there and absorbing the time yourself cannot be described. It’s a big thing to say, but I had one of the best times of my life!

I remember riding my bike across the playa at 6am, on the way back to my camp, and caught a glimpse of the scene behind me. A tear rolled down my cheek as I stared at the sunrise in awe. It was unbelievable. The beauty was unreal.

As unreal and amazing as the experience is, you for real have to have some basics with you for survival! So here’s a first timer’s guide to Burning Man.

Sky's List of Essentials

  1. Water! Hydration paks are both unique and functional.

  2. Lights for you and your bike (it’s for your safety.)

  3. A bike with a lock. My bike got stolen the second I didn't lock it.

  4. A phone or something to take photos (I regret not taking more)

  5. Lip balm

  6. Goggles/glasses & a scarf/mask (Here's a couple pairs of cute glasses to save you plus a few scarves to keep the dust out of your mouth yet keep you weird and stylish.)

  7. Wet wipes to stay clean.

Don't get freaked out about going to BM. I was super overwhelmed and stressed out because of what everyone was telling me, but it’s really not that bad if you stay open minded to just being there and accepting however it will be as it comes. The only really frustrating thing was getting there and out - so be prepared for that.

Sky’s Burning Man Advice

  1. Get there mid-week (Tuesday or Wednesday) and leave the same night after the man burns.

  2. Make sure you have a set camp to stay with and you know where they are located.

  3. Bring your own snacks/ food. I like to be self-sufficient.

  4. Prepare for the grossness. The only thing that sucks about BM is the porta-potties. They are worse than death.

  5. It gets super cold at night so bring really big coats and thick socks and comfortable shoes so your feet/ ankles don't rip like mine.

  6. Don't be afraid to go explore by yourself. I actually ditched my crew every night and rode my bike around the Playa by myself and had the most fun doing what I wanted to do. You learn and grow the most by being independent.

  7. Be open and welcoming to everything around you. Don't judge or put up your walls as you normally do. Just relax and be free.

  8. Have fun dressing up and wearing the most outrageous stuff. Go ham on your costumes and just have fun expressing yourself. My Fav was this Butterfly Fascinator by NiftyThrifty. Totally grab one of these sets of butterfly wings too while you're at it.

My head’s still at burning man, and it’s the ultimate pain. I basically fell in love then was abruptly taken away from my lover. This depression has been hard to deal with. It just wasn't real life. Nothing that happened there would ever happen again, and that truth makes me so sad. It was all a dream… but I lived it and loved every moment of it.
